Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/03/25 13:24Hello all,
I've had swisscenter running on this box before - streaming to a Linktheater, however, something failed (with apache2 I think) and I find myself having to reinstall.
So everyting is in place, but when I point my browser to myipaddress:8080 it shows my homepage - myipaddress:8080/swisscenter shows a blank screen with no errors as does myipaddress:8080/swisscenter/config.
I'm positive last time it was a case of just getting that config page up and creating database in mysql (that was still there, so I have dropped it).
PHP is working, put the script in and point to it and it shows up.
Can someone point me in a forwardish direction?

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/03/29 14:08I have the same problem, only a blank screen. I'm running Debian 3.1a with a hand rolled apache2: Apache/2.0.55 (Unix) PHP/5.0.5 mysql version 4.0.24_Debian-10sarge1

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/03/31 09:30Firstly, you might get this problem if you are running PHP5 as Swisscenter isn't yet compatible with PHP5 (although it's on the to-do list). If you are running PHP4 then I could try installing Debian on a virtual server and see if I can find out what's happening.
Could you please post thedetails I'd need to reproduce your environment as closely as possible. eg:
- Which version of Debian - What install options/packages did you use during installation - Versions of PHP/Apache/MySQL - If you installed PHP, Apache or MySQL manually, then some instructions on what method you used (source install, binary distribution, etc) and configure options.

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/04/01 04:01I'm having the same problem. Debian 3.1, PHP 4.3.10-16, Apache2, Kernel 2.6.8-2-686. Interestingly enough I installed a SUSE Linux 10 VM and had the same problem. Vi identified the source files as "dos" so I ran them through dos2unix just to be on the safe side but I'm still having the same problem.
The scripts seem to execute but return no value (from both the web interface and command line). Random PHP scripts dropped in for testing work fine.
This is killing me and has to be something really stupid that I am overlooking.
phpinfo output for each installation below:

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/04/01 15:41This drove me nuts - for a long, long time so I'm ashamed to say I gave up.
(Had some more important issues to deal with)
However, remembering that when I had it installed I liked it alot (PCAST and Twonky aren't really the same) I want it back!!
It's not a fault with swisscenter I'm sure, as I had it running before and it installed pretty easily (followed redsolo's guide) Any further suggestions? mazzo, freshmaker13 did you have any joy yet??
I too am sure its something ridiculously small and stupid I'm not doing.
Cheers all, please get back if you find the answer

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/04/08 17:42I quickly installed Debian 3.1 on a virtual machine and tried a basic install - and got a blank screen. However, as far as I can tell from the quick look I've had it seems to be failing on the mysql_pconnect() function.
My guess is that PHP isn't configured with mysql support.
Right, a few simple tests for you to try (in the examples below, I've assumed you've installed swisscenter into /srv/www/swissenter - obviously you may need to modify the paths accordingly):
Test 1
Create the file /srv/www/swisscenter/config/test_php.php with the following text:
You should see a screen outputting all the details of your current PHP installation. If MySQL support is enabled, then there will be a section with a title of "MySQL" somewhere on the page.
If you don't see the page, then apache is not executing PHP scripts correctly, or PHP is not installed properly.
Test 2
Create the file /srv/www/swisscenter/config/test_mysql.php with the following text:
If you get a warning or error message, then MySQL support is not enabled in PHP.
I hope this helps.

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/04/21 05:49Hi - is there any resolution to this issue? And does it affect everyone with a Linkstation or just some of you?
I'm trying to decide whether to go with a Linkstation or NSLU2 for my NAS. I'm currently leaning towards the former - but don't want to if SwissCentre isn't going to work. It seems to the only media server which will work with my DVD player (liteon 2010) on linux.

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/06/27 06:00It's working!!
Well.....almost Now I've managed to to get the config screen up (which doesn't always come up??) point my Buffalo Linktheater to the right address and it tells me that gd module is not installed into php - maybe I need to recompile php with that module. This solves it.
apt-get install php4-gd
Works now!

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/14 08:26propman,
If you haven't got too much stuff installed on your Linkstation then I'd say re-flash with freelink and follow <the installation instructions>. You don't need ppc tools
I know this works as I've just upgraded my LS2 to the new freelink and I simply copy&pasted the instructions and it worked.

Thanks for your reply. I've already flashed with freelink, so I think that I'm going to see if I can get it to work following your instructions. The only thing that I see that I know I didn't do is the apt-get for the command line php stuff. (apt-get php4-cli) I'll try that, and see what happens.

I gave it another shot, but still no luck. I installed php4-cli with the following:
apt-get install php4-cli
All of the other modules are installed. I restarted apache, and tried to point the browser to the specified url. I ended up with a blank screen (been blank for 5 minutes now). Here is what I have in the apache error.log file:

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/14 21:34Okay....
I've got all of the errors out of the apache log file, except for the following:
DB_HOST DB_USERNAME DB_PASSWORD DB_DATABASE
error log says that they are all undefined constants.
I'll assume that these are mysql related. How do I check to see if I've got mysql installed correctly? I created the test_mysql.php file that Bauldrick suggested, but when I point the browser to that page, I get a blank page. I do get output when I use the test_php.php file that he suggested.

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/15 09:33Do you have a file /called "mnt/var/www/swisscenter/config/swisscenter.ini"? It *should* look something like this (it defines the details needed to connect to the database in MySQL):
This file is created after you select the option to "Create Database" in the configuration screens (http://localhost:8080/config ). If the file cannot be created, then it might be a permissions problem. Thanks for the reply. I'll check to see if I have the ini file, and double check permissions. I didn't read anything in the installation instructions, but do I need to create a Mysql - and/or - UNIX account for swisscenter?

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/19 23:35Okay...I've checked permissions, and everything in the swisscenter directory (and all other directories) has user/group settings set to www-data. I noticed an entry added to the swisscenter.ini file:
LOGFILE=/var/www/swisscenter/log/support.log
I checked this file, and it is owned by root, and has nothing in it. When I go to the config screen, it is still blank.
For anyone with swisscenter working, if you have the webmin module installed, could you tell me what happens when you go to the server section, and check the my sql database server icon.
Thanks...still troubleshooting & open to suggestions.
New error in log file:

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/21 06:16I would say that you should change the user/group settings on the file to www-data and change the file to 777 if it is a single user machine. If it is a multiuser machine you may want to start with 775.

this should surely be /var/www/swisscenterlog/support.log ??
Just trying to throw some things in to maybe look at, I know I was originally stuck with this problem for a long time, but have since re-installed it a few times without a glitch (apart from getting the movie ratings script to work (admin?!))
By the way - I think instead of moving /var etc... you might get away with just doing:
Code:
mv /usr /mnt/
ln -s /mnt/usr /usr
Most things get installed in usr/local?
Would give you lots of space to play with and maybe you wouldn't have this problem with /mnt/var - /var ?
Hope you get this solved

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/23 21:04Bauldrick-
Thanks for the reply. I did create the symlinks for /home, /usr, and /var. I don't think that I can move /var back to hda1 because du -h -c is telling me that it's 345M in size. df -h is telling me that hda1 only has 319M available. I never got fdisk to re-create the partitions the way that I wanted them to, so I probably should have corrected that in the first place. As it stands right now, I've got over 130GB of data, photos, etc. on the box, so doing the firmware upgrade again (or using fdisk to reconfigure the partitions) near the end on the list of things to try. Robert is going to take a look at my setup, and see if he can figure it out....(fingers crossed)David

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/25 07:04Hi,

Thats a huge % left!!
Re-flashing will not touch your data etc.. on hda3 it just wipes hda1 and reinstalls the system there
I just read through this again and noticed I had your exact message
Code:
Warning: fopen(/var/www/log/support.log): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/swisscenter/base/file.php on line 75
I know for a fact I got that message after swisscenter was up and running and I messed with things in apache in order to get something else running (jinzora I think).
Maybe check /etc/apache/conf.d/swisscenter.conf (or whatever you called it) , and make sure Doc root and <Directory point to where your swisscenter dirrectory is (should be /var/www/swisscenter)

Hey Bauldrick-
Yeah, I realize that 319M is quite a bit, but if I were to move the /var directory back to hda1, it wouldn't fit. I need 345M, and I only have 319M available.
On another note, Robert has taken a look at my setup, and has noted that I need to have apache2 installed, instead of apache. I'm trying to get back to where I was before, but this time, with apache2 running, but I'm having difficulties. I assume that your guide was written for a MIPS linkstation, and not a PPC, correct? At first, I thought that I would be able to use apt-get to remove apache, and install apache2, but it didn't seem to work. I'm trying to start over again, so we'll see how it goes.David

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/26 05:05apt-get remove --purge apache*
I currently run Swisscenter on my LS2 (mips) and I followed this guide here
It's running fine.
I also have an LS1 (ppc) that is now more or less used for testing things on. I have just reflashed it from openlink to freelink and copy&pasted the instructions above, and I had it installed on there in around 5-7 mins.
The only difference I can see is that I resized the partitions on the LS1 (ppc) and do not need to create links from /usr etc..., but on the LS2 (mips) I have created such link from /usr.
I originally ran it with apache2, so it will work, but I fear thats not the problem here.

The guide above doesn't matter what you're running, there are guides for ppc and mips, but they are for openlink users.
I'm trying to start over again
Are you reflashing?? (I would suggest this) Because if you :
a) only create a link from /usr b) copy&paste the guide (follow only steps 1, 3 & 4 on apache - php page) c) pray!!
Seriously though, months I spent trying to get this running, and I know that method works for me everytime now - without fail
Good Luck

So you are running a machine with a 350M and 320M HD? If not you could always use something like FIPS or partition magic to move the partitions back together as you probably shouldn't have made the seperate partitions to begin with. Stupid crappy Linux install instructions always do that and it is dumb for single user machines.

Bauldrick-
Yeah, I guess that reflashing would probably give me the best chance for success. I did try to reflash, but I had trouble. Do you think that I can reflash? If I remember correctly, the last time I tried, it said that I was already at the latest firmware, and would not reflash.

Thanks for your reply. I'm running a Linkstation with a 250GB drive. The original firmware created the partitions, not me, so I'm not sure what you are talking about. If I can (safely) reflash hda1 without losing the data that I have on hda3, then I will give that a try. I think that I will start copying over my data, just in case.David

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/27 12:34In the folder where HD-HLAN FWUpdate.exe (the updater)is, there is a "linkstation_version.txt" change that from VERSION=1.52 (if thats what it is) to something higher say VERSION=1.99, then it should be OK
You will not lose any data on HDA3 (I never have)
EDIT:
when you've flashed it look in /mnt you will still have a usr, var and home in there remove them and then just
mv /usr /mnt ln -s /mnt/usr /usr
any problems with that side of things, get hold of us on the wiki

Thanks for the reply. I'm in the process right now of baking up critical data on the LS, just in case.
It looks like you are recommending moving the /usr directory to /mnt, but leaving the /home and /var directories. Is that correct?
Also, in an e-mail that I got from Robert (swisscenter) he indicated that I needed to be running apache2 for swisscenter. In the instructions that you suggested, it looks like they are installing apache, and not apache2. Did you try this on your ppc LS, and if so, which version of apache worked for you?

Yep, that should give you plenty of room - it has me

I installed it as per the instructions, so it is fine with plain old apache.
I would like to get it running with
Lighttpd PHP Sqlite
as our little boxes get a bit bogged down, but hey - it took me forever to get to here!!
Good luck

Okay, I'll be giving it a try in a few hours, after I finish backing up the data.

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/08/29 12:37Update:
I was able to flash the LS again. I have gone through and moved the /usr and /home directories off of hda1, but left /var per the suggestions in this thread. I haven't gone through the steps to install swisscenter yet, but I am going to try to get to it later this week. From what Bauldrick is saying, it does not look like I need to install apache2, although Robert (swisscenter admin) indicated that I did. The plan is to go with apache, following the steps, and cross my fingers.

Re:Installing on Linkstation (Debian) - 2006/09/03 01:22UPDATE:
Well, quite a bit has happened since my last message. My router took a dive, so I had to pick up a new one. Once I got all of that configured, I went ahead and followed Bauldrick's installation "steps" a few post back.
Long story short....it FINALLY worked!
I was able to get to the configuration screen, and I have started to map swisscenter to my media directories. Next step is to see if it actually works on my Linktheater.
